Exams

Wellness Exams
Vaccinations are no longer the cornerstone of veterinary preventative medicine.  Your pet’s yearly physical exam is key to maintaining your pet’s health.  Early diagnosis is the best way to prevent small problems from becoming large problems, which may lead to a crisis situation.

Vaccines

Vaccines
Pets should be vaccinated to protect them from many highly contagious and deadly diseases. Experts agree that widespread use of vaccines within the last century has prevented death and disease in millions of animals. Even though some formerly common diseases have now become uncommon, vaccination is still highly recommended because these serious disease agents continue to be present in the environment.

The vaccination protocol we recommend is tailored for each individual animal based on his/her lifestyle and risk level.  The underlying protocol is just a guideline and may need to be adjusted to your pet’s individual needs.

Spay/Neutering
The average age of small breed dogs and cats is between 5 and 6 months.

Large breed dogs benefit from having estrogen/testosterone to help with timing of growth plate closure. Growth plates remain open for a long time in neutered animals and may contribute to dysplasia.

The only limiting factor in small breeds is to wait until all adult teeth are in because so many toy breeds retain their deciduous teeth, which need to be extracted at the time of neuter.

Dental Cleanings
Regular dental cleanings are an important part of animal health care.  Animals with poor dental hygiene may suffer unnecessary pain and are succeptable to bacteria entering the bloodstream and heart.

Each one of our dental patients receives a pre-anesthetic blood chemistry profile before being placed under general anesthesia.  Our dental cleanings are thorough, and the teeth are polished to help prevent further decay.

We encourage our clients to maintain a clean mouth through brushing or adding a chlorhexidine supplement to the pet's water.

Nutritional Counseling
Our doctors will design an individual diet, which will address your pet's specific needs: weightloss, urinary tract supplement, allergy relief, and liver or kidney function.

Microchipping
Microchipping is a permanent method of identification. It is a very small chip inserted by a needle under the skin, similar to a vaccination.  The chip number and owner information is place in a national database.  Animal shelters and most veterinary centers can scan the pet's chip to retrieve the identification number and unite pets with their owners.

Digital Radiography

Radiographs are an essential part of many diagnoses. We provide you with state-of-the-art digital radiography, which enables us to give you a faster and more accurate diagnosis. Being digital also  allows us to copy or email our findings if a specialist consultation is needed for your pet.

Digital Ultrasound/Echocariograph

Ultrasound has become an integral part of any diagnostic protocol enabling us to see into the body in a very non-invasive way.

We provide ultrasound of the abdomen, heart (echocardiography), pregnancy, and soft tissue, such as tendon injuries. We are also able to obtain ultrasound guided biopsies, which can aid in the diagnosis of disease or cancer in the abdominal or thoracic cavity in a much less invasive way than a traditional exploratory surgery.

Endoscopy
Endoscopy allows direct visualization inside the body via a lens mounted on a flexible or rigid scope. We can use the endoscope to collect tissue samples for biopsy or culture, as well as to remove foreign material from the  stomach, esophagus, or nose.

Diagnostic/Laboratory Services
We offer a full in-house laboratory to perform rapid diagnostics for blood chemistries, CBC, urinalysis, and many others.
